Child custody battle turns into child abduction

The top priority of most parents is the safety and well-being of their child or children. One of a parent's worst fears is losing a child. In a recent situation in another state, though it could happen in New Jersey or anywhere, a child custody battle turned awry, and the children wound up missing.

For close to six months, two girls, ages 4 and 6, were missing in another state. They disappeared, as did their mother, just after a child custody hearing. Since February, the girls have been declared missing, and their father has been understandably concerned. The county's DA and Sheriff's Department had assistance with the case from the FBI, the United States Marshal's Office, the Department of Homeland Security, the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children, and others.

When authorities went to the mother's house, the neighbors informed them that the house had been vacant for months. Where had the girls been living when they were with their mother for those months and where were they now? No one knew until recently when the girls' mother gave herself up at the United States Consular Office in Los Cabos, Baja, Mexico. The girls were reunited with their father last week, and their mother was arrested and charged with felony child abduction.

A parent may find the other parent unfit to look after their children. A child custody case may be fought in New Jersey in a family law court. With evidence supporting criminal behavior or charges against an offending parent, the other parent may have a greater chance of gaining custody of his or her children. An experienced family lawyer may be the best option to navigate the difficult issues related to determining child custody
