Divorce: Derek and Candace Fisher will destroy frozen embryos

Residents of New Jersey who follow the lives of celebrities will know that when high profile couples split it is not uncommon for intimate details about their lives to become public knowledge. This is once again the case in reports about the divorce of Derek Fisher, former basketball coach of the Knicks team, and his wife, Candace. The couple's divorce filing last March reportedly blindsided Candace.

It was reported that the couple stored several frozen embryos during their 10-year marriage. According to their divorce agreement, all the frozen embryos have to be destroyed. Reportedly, the agreement also includes an annual spousal support payment of $1.3 million to Candace.

The couple has a set of twins that were born during their marriage. Derek Fisher will have to pay Candace child support of $15,000 per month for the care of the children. According to the court papers that were filed last year, Candace Fisher accused her ex of ignoring the texts and calls from their children in the days following the announcement of his intention to file for divorce.

It is not uncommon for one spouse to feel blindsided when the other spouse announces his or her intention to file for a divorce. Divorce is not a process that can be rushed, and regardless of how fast a spouse wants to get it done, an unprepared spouse has a right to put proper planning in place. The most appropriate step may be to seek the support and guidance of an experienced New Jersey divorce attorney to make sure a divorce agreement will protect the rights of the client and his or her children.
