Receiving child support can be critical for the parent providing primary care for the children. With the changing economy and the rising costs, caring for a child is more expensive than ever. Most custodial parents depend on the child support they have been awarded to provide basic needs for their children. Recently, a New Jersey man who was arrested for DWI after crashing his motorcycle was also found to owe close to $3,800 in child support.
The man was injured in the accident and treated at a local hospital for a leg injury. During an investigation, it was determined there was a warrant out for the man's arrest for unpaid child support. He also received citations for five other violations stemming from the accident.
This case is a good example of the importance of the proper filing of child support documents. Because the paperwork was filed and a warrant issued, the police had the authority to arrest this man while investigating an unrelated incident. Having the right paperwork in place is a good way to protect children's needs and make sure a noncustodial parent is held accountable for their responsibilities. Should a parent stop making payments or become delinquent on payments, the appropriate authorities then have the ability to rectify the situation.
Any New Jersey resident involved in a child support proceeding could benefit from having a strong understanding of the law and what they are entitled to for their children. Being armed with the appropriate knowledge can prove beneficial for the child's current well-being, as well as their future. On the other hand, those owing child support they cannot pay would be best served by making a formal application to the court for a downward modification of future child support payments.
